Dumpster Rental FAQ (Everything Answered)
We answer the phone at the Troy, Missouri yard every day from 8 to 4, and the same twenty questions come up over and over. This page is the long version of those calls. It covers how a rental works, what it costs, what fits, what can't go in, how delivery and pickup happen, and what the rules are around here in Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren counties. Where there's a number, we've cited where it came from.
If you'd rather just talk to a person, call or text (636) 399-6361. If you want the whole picture first, keep reading.

How does dumpster rental work?
You tell us what you're throwing out and where the can needs to sit. We quote a flat price that covers delivery, pickup, disposal, and a weight allowance. A truck drops the can on your driveway, usually the next day, on skid plates that protect the concrete. You fill it over the rental period, and you call or text when it's ready. We pick it up and haul it to a transfer station. That's the whole process. There's no dump run, no trailer to borrow, and no line at the landfill gate.
How do I book a dumpster rental with a local provider?
With us, three ways. Call or text (636) 399-6361, email STL@BuzzDumpster.com, or use the quote form on our dumpsters page, which asks for the size, the delivery date, the number of days, and the address. Have the address and a rough description of the debris ready, since those two things set the price.
How far in advance do I need to book?
A day is usually enough. Next-day delivery is our standard, and same-day is possible some days depending on the route. If your date matters, book a few days out.
Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?
No. Send us the placement spot in advance (a photo helps), leave the space clear, and the driver handles the rest. For pickup, just make sure nothing is stacked above the rim and the can is reachable.
Rental Dumpster Sizes and what fits
What dumpster sizes do you offer?
Two. The 15 yard dumpster and the 20 yard dumpster. Both are 14 feet long and 7 feet wide, roughly 98 square feet of ground. The 15 has 5 foot 6 inch walls and the 20 has 6 foot walls. That's the only difference between them, so the choice is about how much you're tossing, never about what fits in the driveway.
What size dumpster do I need for a garage cleanout?
A 15 yard dumpster for one garage. It holds roughly six pickup truck loads of loose junk. If the garage and the basement are both going, or the garage has been collecting for twenty years, take the 20.
What size rental dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?
The 20 yard dumpster. Cabinets, countertops, flooring, and drywall add up fast, and the extra six inches of wall is worth more than the price difference. Keep the old appliances out of the can, since Missouri bans major appliances from landfills. Our sizing guide covers other projects room by room.
How many trash bags fit in a 15 yard dumpster?
A cubic yard holds about six 33-gallon bags, so a 15 yard dumpster holds roughly 90 bags of loose trash and a 20 yard dumpster roughly 120. Bags pack better than loose junk, so bag what you can.
Do you have 10, 30, or 40 yard rental dumpsters?
No. A 10 yard is a heavy-debris box that fills fast on household junk, and our 15 sits on nearly the same footprint with half again the room. A conventional 30 yard is around 23 feet long, based on the dimensions the City of O'Fallon publishes for its own residential roll-off program, which is what puts it half in the street on a suburban lot. For most jobs that would use a 30, a 20 yard dumpster with one swap is easier to place and easier on the budget.
Cost and billing
How much does it cost to rent a dumpster?
Our 15 yard dumpster starts at $439 and our 20 yard dumpster starts at $459. That's a flat price that includes a 14-day rental, delivery, pickup, driveway protection, disposal, and two tons of weight. For national context, HomeAdvisor's June 2026 survey put the average dumpster rental at $386 with most jobs between $294 and $480, and Angi's St. Louis data from February 2026 put a 20 yard rental at $475 to $700 per week (HomeAdvisor and Angi). Our full cost guide breaks down what drives the number.
How much does it cost to rent a dumpster for a week?
The same as for two weeks with us, because every rental includes 14 days. There's no discount for returning it early, and there's no rush. If a week is all you need, you simply call for pickup sooner.
Are there hidden fees?
No. The quote is the price unless one of two things happens: you keep the can past 14 days, which is $15 per day, or the load weighs more than the allowance in your quote, which is billed per ton. Both are spelled out before delivery. If the can has to sit in the street, any city permit fee is separate and you arrange it with the city.
Why do dumpster companies charge by weight?
Because the landfill charges us by weight. The national average landfill tipping fee reached $62.28 per ton in 2024, a 10 percent jump in one year, according to the Environmental Research and Education Foundation's survey of 351 landfills (EREF, 2024 Analysis of MSW Landfill Tipping Fees). A can full of shingles costs several times more to dispose of than a can full of couch cushions, so the allowance keeps light loads from subsidizing heavy ones.
Is there a dumpster rental with no weight limit?
Not one that's telling you the truth. Federal law caps a loaded five-axle truck at 80,000 pounds on the Interstate system (23 U.S.C. Section 127), and every landfill and transfer station bills by the ton. A company advertising no weight limit has priced the heaviest possible load into everyone's rate. We'd rather include two tons and quote heavy jobs as heavy jobs.
Dumpster rental period, delivery, and pickup
How long can you keep a rental dumpster?
Fourteen days is standard for residential rentals. After that, it's $15 per day for as long as you need it. Contractor and commercial accounts run on unlimited days.
Can I rent a dumpster for just one day?
Yes. You'll pay the same flat rate, since 14 days are included, and you call for pickup when you're done. You can fill a 15 in a single Saturday and have it gone by Monday.
Do you offer same-day delivery?
Sometimes. Next-day is the standard we promise. Same-day depends on where the trucks are that morning, so call early and ask. We won't promise it and then miss it.
How do I prepare my driveway for a rental dumpster delivery?
Clear about 60 feet of straight approach and 12 feet of overhead clearance, and move cars out of the way. Point out where you want it, ideally on a flat, hard surface. The can sits on skid plates under the wheels so it doesn't scratch the concrete. If your street or HOA has rules about placement, tell us at booking.
What happens at pickup?
You call or text, we schedule the pickup, and the driver tarps the load and hauls it. Keep everything at or below the rim, since Missouri law requires loads to be secured so nothing can fall off in transit (Revised Statutes of Missouri, Section 307.010). If the can is overfilled, the driver will ask you to level it first.
Where do dumpster rental companies dump the waste?
We haul to transfer stations, not straight to a landfill. Ours are the Meridian Waste stations in Foristell and Winfield, which consolidate loads for the landfill and screen out what doesn't belong (Meridian Waste, Foristell and Winfield transfer station pages). Those same stations won't accept tires, appliances, yard waste, dirt, paint, or batteries, which is a big part of why those items can't ride in the can.
What can and can't go in a rental dumpster?
What items are prohibited in a rented dumpster?
With us: tires, wet concrete, dirt, paints and oils, and air compressors. On top of that, Missouri law bans major appliances, waste oil, lead-acid batteries, and yard waste from landfills, and whole tires are banned as well (Revised Statutes of Missouri, Section 260.250, and Missouri Department of Natural Resources, PUB0186). Our prohibited items guide explains where each one goes instead.
Can I rent a dumpster for yard waste?
Yes. Yard waste has been banned from Missouri landfills since 1992, so it goes in its own can and we route it to composting. Tell us it's a yard job when you book so we don't mix it with household debris.
Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?
Yes. Mattresses and box springs are fine in our cans. Stand them on edge along the wall to save space.
Can I put concrete or brick in a dumpster?
Not mixed into a regular load. Concrete, brick, and dirt are a separate plan because of the weight. The EPA's planning figure for concrete is 860 pounds per cubic yard, and dirt and sand run 929, so a few yards of either eats an entire weight allowance (U.S. EPA, Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors, 2016). Call before demolition day and we'll quote it right.
Are there eco-friendly dumpster rental options?
The eco-friendly part is mostly what happens after pickup. Yard waste goes to composting. Appliances go to scrap metal recycling. Everything else goes through a transfer station where it's consolidated for the landfill. The EPA reports that about 32 percent of U.S. municipal solid waste was recycled or composted in 2018 and half was landfilled (U.S. EPA, National Overview: Facts and Figures), so the biggest lever you have is sorting out donations and recyclables before they hit the can.
Rental Dumpster Permits and rules
What permits are required for placing a dumpster on the street?
It depends on the city. The City of St. Louis requires a blocking right-of-way permit for dumpster placement in the street, with a listed fee of $20 per week for a dumpster in a residential area (City of St. Louis Street Department). The City of St. Charles requires a right-of-way usage permit from its Department of Engineering under Section 505.160 of its code. Smaller towns and unincorporated county areas each have their own approach. Our Missouri permit guide walks through who to call.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my driveway?
Usually no. Permits are about public property, and your driveway is private. Two exceptions: some HOAs have their own rules about visible containers, and a few cities regulate containers even on private lots. A two-minute call to city hall settles it.
Do you serve my town?
Our core area is Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren counties, plus the nearest parts of the St. Louis metro. Troy, Moscow Mills, Winfield, Elsberry, Wentzville, O'Fallon, Lake St. Louis, St. Peters, Warrenton, and Wright City are all regular stops. Check our service area page or call. If you're close to the line, we'll tell you straight.
Frequently asked questions about dumpster rentals
How long can you keep a dumpster rental before extra fees apply?
Fourteen days with us. Day 15 onward is $15 per day, and contractors on commercial accounts get unlimited days.
What are the weight limits for standard residential dumpster rentals?
Two tons are included in every Buzz rental. Loose household junk rarely reaches that, but roofing, drywall, and concrete can, so heavy jobs get quoted with the right allowance up front.
What is the typical rental period for a dumpster?
Fourteen days is standard for homeowners with us. Some companies include seven days and charge daily after that, so compare the included days along with the headline price.
How much does it typically cost to rent a dumpster for a week?
Our 15 yard dumpster starts at $439 and the 20 yard dumpster starts at $459, and both include 14 days, so a week costs the same as two. Nationally, HomeAdvisor's 2026 survey found most rentals land between $294 and $480.
Can you fill a dumpster past the top?
No. Loads have to be level with the rim so the driver can tarp them. Missouri requires secured loads on the road, and a mound over the top can't be secured.
Are there dumpster rental companies that offer same-day delivery?
Some do on some days, and we're one of them when the route allows. What we promise is next-day. Call early in the morning for the best odds on same-day.
